Simple PCB under X-Ray

Sometimes the simplest PCBs look fantastic under X-ray! 🔍

This low-volume vehicle control board arrived needing an encoder replacement, but before removing anything, we had a few questions.

Why did one termination look completely disconnected?

Was the encoder actually manufactured without that pin?

One X-ray image answered everything.

We could clearly see the encoder's internal construction, its terminations, and the PCB trackwork carrying the electrical signals, including exactly where those signals were heading.

Before we had even removed the component from the board, and with no visible part number to work from, we had enough information to identify exactly what we were dealing with.
